How do you select a good defense attorney?

I get this question a few times a week. Presently, firms spend 4 of the 17 percent of time marketing and client (Schuetzle, 2016) with mixed results. When you look online you see the same statements from attorney firms:

- We have a reputation for excellence

- Provide legal services of the highest quality

- We understand the Law

- We get results

- We take an assertive, even aggressive approach

None of these assertions are validated, so the person searching often calls someone they trust for guidance. In a recent survey of risk management professionals conducted on “What are looking for in an attorney”. The survey results are as follows:

- (24%) Relationships- Do we know you and how you work?

- (22%) Responsiveness - How fast do they respond?

- (21%) Do they have knowledge of the company/industry/business?

- (16%) Do they add value? (examples: education and training to our company)

- (11%) Results (settlements)

- (6%) Other

Risk professionals would like an objective, quantifiable assessment tool utilized by an independent and unbiased process that truly measures performance. Would you use this system?
